Found mauled in the merciless desert, he has since been reconstructed into a bionic force; both the arm and leg on his right side are not flesh but metal, clockwork that needs regular winding by a key carried around Burton's neck. He reveals little, but his longevity in this town of orphans and undeniable sense of justice won him the position of sheriff. But on a quiet afternoon, one might come to wonder who chartered a railway all the way out here back in 1827, and what a Virginia short line car was doing on it at all. That derailed car is Easter's chapel now, anyway, so perhaps it was put there by God for the residents of Daingerfield to pray for their own train out of here. One of the stories about Lady St. Pierre tells it that there's a warrant our for her in Oregon for the murder of her husband. Another makes her the victim; it is said that her eye was plucked out and eaten before her in a haze of red by a vengeance seeking Takelma.
